Neighbourhood Guide: Tanglin
Tanglin is one of Singapore’s premier residential districts. Nestled between Holland Village and Orchard, its serene and verdant neighbourhood offer privacy and escapade from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Take a stroll down the leafy-lined streets, where you’ll find an array of beautiful grand bungalows and landed properties. As the area was first developed by British colonialists, many residential properties are large and bear the colonial architecture from that era. There are also condominiums, apartments and townhouses; some of which are low-rise blocks with landscaped gardens. The contemporary detached and semi-detached homes meanwhile, are ideal for families with children as they are built with plenty of living and entertainment areas. Most of these homes are in quaint streets where there isn’t too much traffic.
Tanglin is very much an embassy territory due to a high concentration of expatriates living and working in this area. You can find embassies from various foreign countries including the British High Commission, the United States Embassy, the Embassy of Japan and the Chinese Embassy, to name a few.
The area is served by the Botanic Gardens and Farrer Road MRT stations. Despite no major expressways running through Tanglin, it’s easy to get to the Ayer Rajah (AYE) and Pan Island (PIE) Expressways which are just a short drive away.
As there are many expat families with children in the area, several well-known international schools are located within vicinity including the Tanglin Trust School and Invictus International School. The Tanglin Trust School for example, offers a comprehensive bus network that picks up the children in the morning and drops them off at home in the afternoon.
Tanglin is no short of world class medical care. There are two leading hospitals in the area, including the Gleneagles Hospital and Mt Elizabeth Hospital. You can also find The Dental Specialist which specializes in cosmetics, implant dentistry and restorative services.
Retail/ dining/ entertainment
Dempsey Hill is Tanglin’s popular lifestyle destination, having an extensive array of dining, shopping and entertainment options. Its historic heritage combined with tranquil surroundings make Dempsey Hill a leisure hotspot for art lovers, foodies and shopaholics alike. You’ll find a diverse mix of art galleries, trendy cafes and furniture shops thriving here.
The Tanglin Mall and Serene Centre are great retail places as they house locally owned boutiques. For entertainment, the liveliest bars can be found around Tanglin Village. If you’re into prestige, the Tanglin Club has extensive dining and recreation amenities and is one of Singapore’s most prestigious clubs.
If you fancy local eats, the Adam Road Food Centre is the ideal place for you to hunt down plenty of Singapore’s scrumptious dishes.
